Poem #16 – Old and Bitter

i said: ‘old man, why so bitter’?
so contained in the life of another
a prisoner to growing barriers
halting the desire to be free

i said: ‘you can’t do this forever’
letting go doesn’t make a quitter
there’s a future you’re missing
free from this dark imagery

you said: ‘you don’t know me’
and if you’d lived as thee
you’d be stuck in the same cycle
of pain and misery

you don’t know how it is
to see that face of his
staring bluntly back
in every face you see
