Poem #20 – An Imagined Misery

bitterness is part of you
it’s in the words you say
sadness runs through
staining your mouth grey

at the hurdle: down
where you’ll lay
misery cloaks as a gown
growing with passing day

blocking out the real
an imagined misery
who’s there to clip your heel?
when you choose to live bitterly

a captive of what has been
you write the same words
each one blander than the last
like the constant of the crying bird

perhaps soon you will find
a better place to hide
a peaceful mind
god knows you’ve tried
